Attention Communications Professionals: Time to Offer Up Your Talent!

As communications professionals, it’s more important than ever to donate your time and talent to organizations in need.

I started volunteering with the American Advertising Federation – Louisville (AAF) in 2016 as a member of their communications committee focusing primarily on providing public relations support.

Today, as the V.P. of Communications, my work extends to everything from drafting social content to providing strategy on critical messaging.

As our physical worlds have gotten smaller, and with the impacts of COVID-19 still threatening our communities, many organizations are moving the bulk of their communications online.

This pandemic has completely changed the way we reach audiences. From retail establishments, to restaurants, to non-profit organizations – all sectors are adjusting and adapting daily to reach audiences more effectively.

Additionally, accountability and social responsibility have taken a front-seat. At a time when so many of our populations are vulnerable, audiences want to know they are investing their time, energy, and money with companies that stand for something.

Now more than ever, organizations are looking to communications professionals for guidance. It’s often hard to know what to do. But having critical thinkers in the room (or on Zoom) with experience in coaching clients through tough waters is key.

It’s also mutually beneficial. When in-person social gatherings are limited, volunteering your time with an organization offers new opportunities to network and grow your own relationships, even while working from home.

As the 2020 – 2021 V.P. of Communications, I am looking forward to working with AAF as they move forward with several of their initiatives – including acting as the voice of the advertising industry in Louisville and working to grow diversity within the industry as a whole. If you are interested in working with AAF, you can learn more about volunteering here.

And if not, that’s okay too! I encourage you to find an organization whose mission you are passionate about. Volunteer your time and talent to them. At a time when communication is so important – they won’t turn you down.
